Botswana’s CAF representatives for the upcoming season, Gaborone United and Jwaneng Galaxy, are set to receive a significant financial boost. Each club will benefit from a $100,000 (approx. P1.4 million) grant from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The announcement was made by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during a press briefing in Morocco, just days before the kickoff of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. This marks a 100% increase from the previous $50,000 allocation provided to clubs competing in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

According to CAF, the move is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen financial sustainability and elevate professional standards for African clubs participating in elite competitions.

Gaborone United director Nicholas Zakhem welcomed the development, highlighting its importance for leagues with fewer financial resources:

“This is a step in the right direction. Many clubs across Africa struggle with the financial demands of continental tournaments. CAF’s support empowers teams to compete without facing crippling costs,” he noted.

Tankiso Morake, spokesperson for Jwaneng Galaxy, echoed the sentiment:

“Travel and accommodation across Africa are expensive, and logistics can be a nightmare. This increased support from CAF makes a real difference.”

Gaborone United will compete in the CAF Champions League, while Jwaneng Galaxy will take part in the CAF Confederation Cup.
