Reigning champions Gaborone United began their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 away win at Calendar Stars. In a tense Week 1 clash, veteran midfielder Thatayaone Kgamanyane struck in the 77th minute, converting a scoring chance for the only goal of the match. Gaborone’s defence then held firm to secure the clean sheet and three points.
It was a tight, cagey contest for much of the game. Calendar Stars, making their top-flight debut, defended stoutly and frustrated the visitors through the first half. Gaborone United grew into the match over time and applied pressure. Eventually Kgamanyane broke the deadlock with a well-taken strike, giving the champions the lead late on. Calendar Stars pressed for an equalizer, but Gaborone’s back line and goalkeeper stood firm in the closing stages to preserve the win.
With the victory, Gaborone United also move to 3 points (goal difference +1). They sit among the early leaders, though behind Galaxy and Rollers on goal difference. The result gives the champions an opening-day edge and confidence. Calendar Stars, while disappointed not to score at home, can take heart from a solid defensive effort in their first Premier League match. Both teams will look ahead to Week 2 with Gaborone aiming to build on this start, and Calendar Stars eager to secure their first point in the league.
