Botswana's senior women's national football team, the Mares, recently wrapped up their participation in the Three Nations Challenge, held in South Africa from May 28 to June 3 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. This tournament provided valuable preparation for Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia as they gear up for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.
Although Botswana didn't claim the top spot, the team displayed significant character and progress throughout the competition. They began their campaign with a close 3-2 loss to reigning African champions, South Africa, in a fiercely contested match. The Mares then showcased their resilience and tactical discipline, bouncing back to secure a 1-1 draw against Zambia.
Final Tournament Results:
South Africa 3–2 Botswana
Botswana 1–1 Zambia
South Africa 2–0 Zambia
South Africa's Banyana Banyana were ultimately crowned champions, winning both of their matches. The tournament offered crucial game experience for all teams involved. Botswana's technical team, under Head Coach Alex Malete, will undoubtedly use these matches to fine-tune their squad for the vital WAFCON qualifiers.
